I mention those figures so you can get an idea of how much content is being produced online every single hour. If you are starting out blogging, I now believe it is critical that you learn how Google ranks websites for different keywords.

When I first started blogging back when I was still in college, I wanted to write about key things that I was passionate about and thought people should be reading. That was Okay and still believe to this day that you can write stuff driven by your passion but once you understand that you are wasting time, you’ll make this more seriously. Why a waste of time?

You need to rank and Keyword research tools can assist:

What are keyword research tools?

Keyword research tools are a number of tools that you can enter the keyword you are looking to rank for and it can give you the competitiveness of the keyword.

There is no chance for your blog to show up on Google SERP if you have not followed basic SEO techniques. This post is part of the SEO learning journey that can assist you to increase traffic and actually make more money online.

The image below shows the logos of a few select keyword tools that made to our list of valuable keyword research tools.

examples of top keyword tools in 2020

For over six months when I was writing affiliate content, I didn’t use any tool and I grew to learn to use a minimal number of tools.

Keyword Research Tools Benefits

Keyword research tools are important for the following reasons;

  1. They ensure the right traffic to your website as they enable you to study the market, understand the ever-changing nature of keywords relevant not only to your website’s content but also to search engines, in order to offer content that web searchers actively seek.
  2. They offer improved conversion as they aid to determine the size and market potential of any specific product or service. Moreover, Keyword search tools can provide you with more money-making keywords; this allows you to gain the most value from any single term or phrase.
  3. They provide insights into current consumer behavior trends and relevant keywords to help you write better and provide what your customers really want. The more keywords a keyword research tool generates, the greater the chances of identifying and targeting profitable niche markets.
  4. They guarantee you properly allocate your time as you don’t spend time creating content on keywords that don’t raise the bottom line.
  5. They aid webpages rank highly in search engines, particularly the long-tail keywords that are critical to your online success because they are less competitive with other websites.
  6. They provide market analysis across different metrics, uncovering worthy keywords that are both common and unique.

What info can Keyword Tools Give you?

Wondering what information keyword research tools provide? As mentioned above, I didn’t start blogging with a big budget so I learned fast that understanding the search intent is key to writing a superb article that answers key questions.

As I prepared to write this article, I used my two favorite tools to find the related keywords that rank alongside the ‘Keyword Research Tools‘ keyword and here is part of the snapshot I got.

Info about keyword you get with a tool.

I used AnswerthePublic and Keyword Everywhere to get the snapshot above. Whether the tools are combined, it gives the related searches and what each of the LMS keyword search volume/month as well as the CPM and the keyword difficult to rank.

Search volume of Keywords

Most tools give you a volume of searches for a keyword in a particular time frame. Most of them such as SEM Rush, Ahref, Google Keyword Planner will give you the searches per month. Most of them are not super accurate.

keyword-search-volume-seasonal-keywords

Why is it important to know the keyword volume? Keyword volume metrics allow you to decide whether the keyword you want to optimize and rank for is worth the effort, given the number of searches per month.

For example, would you want to rank for a high competition keyword with just 10 searches per month? Probably not. You are probably better off writing and optimizing to rank for another keyword with similar keyword difficulty but with 10 times more searches per month.

Another reason why the keywords volume metrics is that it gives you the portion of traffic driven by various sources. You’ll get this info on your Google Analytics account. If people are searching keywords that you are not ranking for, then the search traffic will every little compared to other sources. Most sites rely on search traffic to drive more than 70% of the site visits.

Keyword Difficulty (also shorted as ‘KD’)

Keyword difficulty is our second most critical metric that gives you an idea of how easy you may be able to rank a keyword on the first Search Engine Results Pages (SERP) – Usually, this number is about 10 first results your search engine returns when you search a keyword.

When you search for a keyword such as ‘baby monitor‘, you’ll get a distribution curve with commercial keywords such as best baby monitor being the most competitive (usually having a Keyword Difficulty of 1, on the scale of 0 to 1). The less competitive keywords follow a search demand curve where there are fewer searches but many variations, hence the low competition.

Moz did a study and revealed how the search demand curve could assist you to narrow down your keyword research to lower competition keywords – mostly the long-tail keywords. In our example above, it would be a keyword such as ‘baby monitors to use when camping‘ which has a Keyword Difficulty (KD) of 0, on a scale of 0 to 1. The keyword difficulty distribution will give you a portion of related keywords that rank along the graph as shown in the graph below by Moz (2016). You can read more about the Moz study written by Rand here.

Keyword search demand curve study by Moz

You should note that there are far more keywords that are easy to rank in the tail end of the X-axis above. In fact, another study revealed that low competition keywords are usually about 68% with moderate and higher competition splitting the remaining 32% as shown in the graph below.

Keyword difficulty distribution

Here are the common Keyword Difficulty splits:

  1. Easy: Easy keywords have a KD score of 1 to 30 (0 – 100 scale) or 0 to 0.3 (scale of 0 to 1).
  2. Moderate: Moderate KD keywords have a KD score of 31 to 60 (1 – 100 scale) or 0.31 to 0.6 (scale of 0 to 1).
  3. High: High KD keywords have a KD score of 61 to 100 (0 – 100 scale) or 0.61 to 1 (scale of 0 to 1).

If you are starting out, I highly encourage you to focus on ranking for low competition keywords, low KD and high volume in the topics you want to rank for.

Competitive analysis

This year, 2021, I have been using a lot of competitive analysis tools out there, free and paid. My favorite is Ubersuggest by Neil Patel. So, what is competitive analysis when doing keyword research.

When you want to write about any topic. Think of any such as Solar Panels. If you are a newbie and just starting to learn about solar panels, you can analyze your competitors’ keywords and find those with the lowest KD.

How do you get the keywords of your competitors? Is there are competition analysis template and what tools are out there?

Ubersuggest is built to enable anyone to take charge of competitor analysis. In the snapshot below, you can see the notice that Neil has put there: “try your competitor’s domain name to get better keyword ideas.”

Competitor Analysis Ubersuggest

If you put your competitor’s keyword such as 10babygear.com, you can see all the low-KD keywords that the website ranks for.

Trending similar keywords

Keyword tools also give you similar words that other internet users search regarding a particular topic. BuzzSumo tells you what is trending and its content analysis tool has a tool that allows you to compare domains ranking for particular keywords.

Sites traffic

Most keyword research tools also reveal the traffic that a particular site receives. However, after comparing the traffic data, I found most of the tools approximate the traffic. Some underestimate such as Uberssugest while others are more accurate.

See below report of 10BabyGear by Ubersuggest:

Traffic site data of 10BabyGear by Ubersuggest

On the other hand, Moz indicates that 10babygear.com has an average of 24,500 visitors per month and this is closer to the truth (as reported on Google Analytics).

Domain insight

Keyword tools also give you the insight into the domain metric with details such as the rating of the domain, domain rating, linking domains, keywords a domain ranks for and spam score

Click-Through-Rate CTR

You can get a domain CTR in some tools such as Ahref and Google’s Search Console.

Several SEO tools and keyword planners can generate a PDF report at certain intervals. These reports may give you the analysis of the keywords your domain is ranking for.
